Onalaska

Foggy morning in Onalaska, WI

Onalaska is Wisconsin’s gateway to the Mississippi River and the Wisconsin Great River Road National Scenic Byway.

Onalaska, WILocated on the bluffs along the Mississippi River, Onalaska gives the traveler a chance to experience the best that this scenic region has to offer. In Onalaska, bicyclists and hikers can connect to the Great River State Trail as well as 101 miles of interconnected state trails.

The 7,700-acre Lake Onalaska is known as the “Sunfish Capital of the World,” but it’s also a popular destination for anglers pursuing walleye, bass, northern pike and catfish.

Onalaska’s location at the center of Wisconsin’s only National Scenic Byway, the Wisconsin Great River Road, makes it the perfect jumping-off-point for explorations up and down the Mississippi River. And protected wetlands and wildlife refuges surround the community, making Onalaska an ideal place for birders to see both migrating species and the waterfowl and songbirds who nest in the area’s wetlands and forests.

But Onalaska offers more than just great natural resources—the community is also home to the largest retail district in a nine-county region, making it a convenient place to stay, dine and shop.

You need to discover Onalaska on the Mississippi River. Plan your trip.
