On your Wisconsin road trip this summer, be prepared to stop and shop for fine art by local artists
Per capita, Wisconsin has an inordinately large number of artists and craftspeople. At small shops and galleries throughout the state, you’ll find the creations of individuals working in an assortment of disciplines, from oil painting to chainsaw art. These two small galleries—one in northern part of the state and the other in the south—are great places to get a taste of the artistic talent that permeates Wisconsin.
Located in the quiet resort town of Boulder Junction, Moondeer & Friends Gallery brings together a mix of antiques and art, including a healthy dose of artwork created by local artists.
If there’s any single place in the northern Wisconsin that embodies fine art, this is it. In total, more than 140 different artists are represented by the gallery. Over the past ten years, the gallery has continued to grow, becoming an important venue for Northwoods artists to display their work. Set aside some time for your visit to Moondeer & Friends—there’s a lot to see.
In the southern part of Wisconsin, a fantastic place to buy work created by local artists is the Bindley Collection Gallery in Middleton. This inviting gallery features the works of more than 90 different artists from the area. There’s a dazzling mix of media and styles, including paintings, prints, sculpture, jewelry, wearable arts, and fine crafts, in ceramic, glass, fiber, paper, metal and wood.
Throughout the year, the gallery presents receptions and exhibitions highlighting various disciplines or showcasing a particular artist’s work. If you’re in Middleton or visiting the Madison area, the Bindley Collection Gallery should not be missed.
