Is there a better tasting fish than the crappie? And is there a more fun fish to catch through the ice? It’s a good question to ponder on one of Wisconsin’s beautiful lakes. Some of these lakes rise above others for crappie fishing. Check out these hotspots, good luck and have fun.

Black River Falls – Lake Arbutus

This 774-acre lake has clear water, a maximum depth of 50 feet and is also home to musky, panfish, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, northern pike, walleye and catfish.

Vilas County – Manitowish Chain Of Lakes.

Known for great crappie fishing, these Manitowish Waters lakes include Rest Lake (809 acres), Stone Lake (139 acres), Fawn Lake (74 acres), Clear Lake (555 acres), Spider Lake (272 acres), Island Lake (1023 acres), Manitowish Lake (496 acres), Little Star Lake (245 acres), Wild Rice Lake (379 acres) and Alder Lake (274 acres).

Oneida County – Willow Flowage

This 4,217-acre lake has a maximum depth of 30 feet. In addition to crappie, Willow is home to musky, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, northern pike and walleye.

Rhinelander – Boom Lake

This 1,763-acre lake has a maximum depth of 30 feet. Besides crappie, you’ll find musky, northern pike, largemouth bass and other panfish.

Onalaska – Lake Onalaska

This La Crosse County lake covers 8,391 acres and has a maximum depth of 40 feet. You’ll find crappie, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, northern pike and walleye.
