Mountain Biking in Late Fall: Two Trails to Try

Late fall might just be the best time of the year to be out on the trail: the trails are dry and the crisp cold air makes for comfortable riding. Plus, on most Wisconsin trails, you’ll find very little traffic in the fall. It’s a great time to be biking.

There are a few things to remember when riding in the fall. Dress in layers – you can quickly get overheated, and there’s nothing fun about being all sweated up while you’re riding. When riding in the fall in Wisconsin, it’s a good idea to wear something bright in areas where there might be hunters. And, don’t forget to bring along something warm to drink at the end of the ride.

Standing Rocks County Park, Stevens Point Area

Mountain Biking Trails to Try this Fall

Fall is a great time for mountain biking in Wisconsin. Nearly every trail is dry enough to ride and the forests are lush and green. Wisconsin boasts hundreds of excellent mountain biking trails. A bicyclist doesn’t have to go far to find a place to ride.

But, not all mountain biking trails are made the same. These are some of the top mountain biking trails in the state.

Razorback Ridges – Head to Vilas County to experience one of the top mountain biking destinations in the state. Winding trails and rolling hills await you on this trail through the forest. Every mountain biker should try this trail.

Middleton Bike Park – In Middleton, you’ll find one of the coolest mountain biking experiences in southern Wisconsin. The Middleton Bike Park features a pump track, a jump line and a short single-track loop. It’s a fun, relaxing place to work on your mountain biking skills.

Sisters’ Farm Mountain Biking Trail System – Located on the banks of the Flambeau River near Ladysmith in Rusk County, this beautiful 12-kilometer trail thrills riders of all ability levels.

Standing Rocks County Park – Ride challenging single-track trails through a peaceful woodland setting in the Stevens Point Area. It’s one of the best places to ride in central Wisconsin.

Mud Lake TrailRhinelander’s Mud Lake Trails offers eight miles of mountain biking trails through tall forests. It’s one of the top rides in the Northwoods.

Wisconsin’s Best-kept Mountain Biking Secrets

Wisconsin offers a wealth of mountain bike trails. Ample public land, a long tradition of trail development and picturesque scenery make Wisconsin a great place to bike. This summer, discover some of Wisconsin’s best-kept mountain biking secrets. These three mountain biking opportunities are definitely worth the trip.

Mountain Biking in Middleton

The Pleasant View Golf Course in Middleton is one of the best places to golf in Wisconsin. It’s also a great place to bike! The Middleton Bike Park is located on the golf course’s property. The park features a pump track, a jump line and a single-track loop. The pump track is a winding course that allows the rider to use their momentum to roll over the trail. The jump line gives mountain bikers a chance to get off the ground and enjoy a little “air time.”  And, the single-track loop gives you a chance to pedal through the woods and over boardwalks. This little bike park truly has it all.

Adventurous mountain bikers will find a number of vast areas of public forest to explore. One of the most scenic tracts of land is the Black River State Forest near Black River Falls. This forest of hardwoods and yellow pines presents mountain bikers with 24 miles of outstanding trails. There are two trailheads and a number of trail loops cutting through challenging terrain. This is an exciting place to ride.

The Raven Trails in Vilas County are some of the best mountain bike trails in the state. The trail loops are designed for intermediate-level and expert mountain bikers. Find the Best Fall Mountain Biking in Wisconsin

Some trail suggestions to help you in your trip planning

Fall is the perfect time for mountain biking in Wisconsin. Cooler weather makes it comfortable to go pedaling though the fields and forests of the Badger State. Here are some suggestions for your fall mountain biking excursions.

Middleton Bike ParkMiddleton Bike Park – This new mountain biking opportunity in Middleton has it all. A short “pump track” lets riders work on their skills. A jump line gives you a chance to get some air. And a single-track loop through the woods gives you an opportunity to enjoy beautiful fall color.

New Fane Mountain Biking Trail – Located just north of West Bend  in the Northern Unit of the Kettle Moraine State Forest, the New Fane Mountain Biking Trail features loops ranging from 0.5 to four miles. The trail offers views of rolling hills, a pond and meadows as it winds its way through the state forest. It’s a short but satisfying mountain biking trail, and in the fall it is truly scenic.

Sisters Farm TrailsSister’s Farm Trails – See autumn splendor on the banks of the Flambeau River as you bike the Sister’s Farm Mountain Biking Trail System in Rusk County. Ride 12 kilometers of trail segments that afford outstanding views of the river and present some challenging riding. The system includes both single-track and multi-track biking and needs to be on your list for riding this fall.

Washburn Lake Trail – This hilly trail in Oneida County runs through gorgeous forests and gives riders ample opportunity to appreciate the fall scenery.
