You’ve made the decision to hit the open road and visit one (or all) of our dozen unique destinations.
So what are you going to do once you get there? Here are three local highlights to help you plan your trip.
1. Wazee Lake. Did you know the deepest lake in Wisconsin is manmade? Wazee Lake, situated about 8 miles east of downtown Black River Falls, was formed when the Jackson County Iron Mine Quarry shut down in 1983, filling the site – complete with roadways and a small forest – with water that now reaches depths of 355 feet. The crystal-clear water provides fantastic scuba diving opportunities all year long, and divers can navigate sheer rock faces, marvel at the rich aquatic life and even explore a shipwreck. http://www.blackrivercountry.net/recreation/scuba-diving/
2. Black River State Forest. Spanning 68,000 acres, the Black River State Forest was established in 1957 and offers visitors a wide array of recreational opportunities, from camping and hiking to snowmobiling and cross-country skiing. The forest features bountiful wildlife, including black bears, white-tailed deer, bobcats, ruffed grouse and wolves. One of the forest’s unique attractions is the Dike 17 Wildlife Area, a 3,700-acre site featuring 20 flowages constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps and the Works Progress Administration in the 1930s. Today, rare birds like the whooping crane can be seen in the area. 910 Highway 54 East, Black River Falls;http://dnr.wi.gov/forestry/stateforests/SF-BlackRiver; (715) 284-4103
3. Sand Creek Brewing Company. If your travels make you thirsty, stop by the award-winning Sand Creek Brewery in downtown Black River Falls, just a few blocks from the Black River. Located in a brewery building that’s been around since 1856, Sand Creek moved its operations to the area in 2004 after buying out the Pioneer Brewing Company. Sand Creek’s brews have been honored by the prestigious World Beer Cup. Tours of the facility are offered every Friday at 3 p.m. 320 Pierce St., Black River Falls;www.sandcreekbrewing.com; (715) 284-7553
